SHIELD NICKELS (1866-1883)
Shield Nickels (1866-1883): Shield Nickels are made of 75% copper and 25% nickel. In 1866, there were rays bordering around the "5" on the reverse. This was removed in mid-1867 production, making two varieties in 1867. Only proof issues were struck in 1877 and 1878.
